Steve Atkerson wrote this which was forwarded:

>First, I am writing to say, I feel your pain! Some of the more extreme
>and unbalanced folks in the so-called house church movement are really a
>cause for alarm and have blackened the reputational eye of home churches
>so much so that I shy away from openly flying under that flag now, though
>I am still very much a part of and a believer in home based and home
>sized churches.

Does anyone else feel like Steve? He edited and published a hc book
several years ago and knows his way around town. He is keenly interested
in church multiplication, unlike those who were mentioned which do not.

I don't see as much negative feedback compared to several years ago. The
lists where house church issues are discussed are much more readable than before.
New ones are forming to satisfy about everyone.

I am essentially operating under the flag of Captain Jesus, of course, as
is Steve, but I cannot help but wonder if others are still embarrassed by
"house church culture"? I see many encouraging things happening. I feel
that ignoring the negative is better than apologizing on behalf of others
since I see less and less to apologize for...

Steve, would you write another paragraph or two sometime and enlarge upon the above? Thanks, brother.

Dear Church

Yes Jesus does care more for people than buildings.
We need to remember that we are all brothers and sisters but we are not
all twins

What I mean to say is that Jesus calls all of His brothers and sisters
to ministry but
HE DOES NOT CALL US ALL TO THE SAME TYPE OF MINISTRY.
Please be careful when speaking against what God has called others to.
We need to find ways in which we can work together with all expressions
of gatherings
be it House Church, Mega-Church, Community Church or House Church
Network.

Jesus said He would build His church. And he told us to make disciples.
Let's find ways to make disciples together so God will build His church.

Love in Jesus

Dear John and brothers and sisters,

If this man were really doing God's work, he would try to get 200,000
people to donate in order to feed the hungry, help the orphans and
widows,

or maybe build a school or hospital in a needy country. God cares little
for 'church buildings'. He cares more for people than for buildings.

Hi, guys.

I'm a new guy from Montana.

While I would agree that it's true that God calls His people to different types
of ministry, it is also true that believers must be discerning.

God gives us the mind of Christ (see 1 Cor 2) -- both by His Holy Spirit that
lives in each believer, and in the plainly written text of Holy Scripture,
which is the Bible.

In the text of Scripture we have the words of our Lord Jesus warning us to
beware of all -- ALL -- covetousness. And yet we have many so
called "ministers" of God who busy themselves continually with the raising of
money for their own "needs" and "ministries."

Greed has already done much to corrupt the image of the church -- the true
Church -- in the eyes of the world. False apostles, false pastors, false men
of God have used radio, TV, direct mail, and now email and the internet, to
raise millions of dollars for themselves. The successful ones drive around in
fine cars and live in fine homes, wear fine clothing and expensive jewelry --
at the expense of poor widows and other needy brothers and sisters.

This is evil. It is not of God. It is not the work of God's Spirit in the
world. We know from Scripture that God reaches out to heal, to help, to feed,
and to give life. People need Jesus.

Jesus did not raise money from the crowds in order to build a fine meeting
place, or to have fine horses and donkeys, or to gather for Himself a fine
wardrobe. He often had no place to lay His head.

Paul worked with his own hands to supply his needs, and the needs of those
around him -- so as not to place a burden on the people who needed the Gospel,
and who needed to be grounded in Scripture.

The OT condemns the priest and the prophet who teach or speak for hire. Jesus
condemned the Scribes for being greedy tothe point of putting the poor and
widows out of their homes.

God gave us both His own Son, and the apostle Paul as examples of a right
attitude toward wealth in ministry. We must be careful.

As has been said, the size of the church itself means nothing, one way or the
other, so long as God Himself is the Shepherd through Jesus Christ. But when
our human eyes are turned to a man, and a fine building., the danger is greater
that we will be misled.

Let our eyes be turned to Jesus. Let us gather in His Name, to hear from Him,
both collectively and individually.

In gatherings where the whole Body participates in ministry, freely sharing and
praying together -- as opposed to a one man show -- then the danger of greed
and arrogance and evil may be lessened. Christ, who is Head over all things to
the Body, can use the various members of that local Body gathering to
counteract the weaknesses of others.

It's something to think about. And it may be wiser than setting our goals of
hundreds of thousands of dollars so that we can become more like the nations
that live around us -- to pull a thought from 1 Samuel.
